News #73

Posted by Hathcock at Aug 9 2006, 01:30 AM

Welcome back to the 73rd official Point of Existence News posting. I’m thinking that I’m in the writing mood and plan on providing new updates for the rest of the week. I usually write the news in 3rd person so that I’m not taking away credit of what this team has done since the last POE update. This week is going to be different because I want to talk about the work that these guys do on their own personal time. Being the Project Leader I get to have the easiest job, I get to sit back and watch what our developers do and try to keep them on-target. The group consists of people from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, USA, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands. They come from all walks of life, range in the age of 17 to 35+, and all speak different languages. It’s been amazing that the 25+ people on the development team can actually get anything done but it’s because of the determination that they have – and the desire to provide a great gaming experience to the gaming community. Most of the developers are guys that work a full time job to provide for their families and then spend all of their personal time behind the screen of the computer trying to create something better than the last time that they had worked on the mod. Pretty much everything within the Battlefield:2 game has been touched in one way or another. When we started on the mod it seemed like the common goal between the developers was that we weren’t competing against EA/Dice or other mod teams but competing against ourselves with what we have already developed as a team. We still have part of our original staff from POE:1 and have added a lot more members to cover the colleagues that moved on.

The team reached a milestone this weekend with releasing POE:2 into Release Candidate status to our testers. To assist us with making sure the build is stable before we release to the public we have included 151 stress testers. The stress testers consist of the Forgotten Hope Development Team and Testers, friends of our developers & testers, and Battlefield:2 community representatives from the multiple websites worldwide. The stress testers represent France, Spain, Serbia, Estonia, Norway, Finland, Germany, Australia, USA, Switzerland, and Austria. The invite was sent out to all of the sites that report on POE:2 and we added a few from each site that responded. The team wants to provide the game that will be enjoyed for some time to come and figured it was best to get people from all over the world to help us. Just like EA and Dice, we are developers with our own timelines and we’ve had to make decisions on what is best for us. There will be things that we are sure some won’t like and hope that the majority do. Our testers have done a good job looking for every type of bug within the game and we are aware of things that won’t be perfect when we release. In our mind we think that when we do release that it will be as solid release as we can get it and the issues that need addressing will be included in hot fixes afterwards.

So let’s get to the good stuff. One of our most dedicated members that has been around since POE:1 is D_Fast. I think this guy has spent so much time that we need to create a Developers support group to help him learn how to turn away from his computer screen. D_Fast has always been a very helpful person on the team and to the Battlefield community. He has always been about the “Battlefield Community”. From writing tutorials to assisting other mod teams with coding issues it seems like he has always been there for everyone. Before coming to our team D_Fast was a member of the quality mod team “Forgotten Hope”. Personally that is one of my other favorite mods from BF:1942 that my son and I continue to play. D_Fast came to the team as a “coder” but lucky for us he has skills that are way beyond just coding. He can develop maps, models, skins, and code. One of the items that he took some extra time with is with the HUDS of the vehicles – both ground and air. Take a look below of some of his work…

One of the renders that we decided to wait and show until we are close to releasing is the German PzH-2000 mobile artillery. This happens to be the King of the Battlefield as by design in real life. Wait till you see it in game!

Until POE:2 is released only in-game screenshots will be shown as the PzH-2000 was the last render that we needed to showcase. So to finalize our news we’ll provide some screenshots that Geledonutt provided for your viewing pleasure.

So that’s it for news post #73. Expect to see our media blitz begin as we’ll be posting daily posts with screenshots from our testers and the Battlefield:2 community websites will begin posting their own previews of POE:2. It’s time, POE:2 beta 1.0 is coming!

Game On!
